"That may work on whiteboard, but in reality it’ll just continue to hit low income families the hardest, as increased taxation always does (and that includes inflation)."

Increased taxation doesn't hit low income families the hardest. There are two kinds of governments:

(a) Those that don't have a clue, and raise taxes when they run out of money, that is usually when the whole country is screwed. That screws with everyone, rich and poor alike, but since such governments usually don't have a clue, instead of doing the sensible thing and screwing the rich more, they let themselves be bamboozled into screwing everyone equally, which will make things keep getting worse till the ineffective government is booted out, or worse. In those situations, low income families may feel hit the hardest, but that isn't the fault of taxes as such, but the fault of clueless government.
(b) Those governments with a clue, that raise taxes when the country is prosperous, so that they have a buffer for bad times. Those taxes don't hurt anybody too much, because everybody is doing well.
