One of the factors that you mentioned briefly is how AI agent's access to digital money will accelerate the process. Another is how it is being used by the surveillance state. It would be great to have a crystal ball to help guide us in our preparations for the future. In the past, great visionary sci-fi writers have provided us with a glimpse of the future, but this seems to be moving at a pace that even they can't keep up with. If anybody knows of any recent visionary sci-fi books/stories that have an updated depiction of how they imagine the future, I'd be interested in recommendations.

I Graduated from EE (Queens) in 1970. I worked at Ontario Hydro and my first assignment was to assist in a commissioning of a hydro power plant in far northern Ontario. My assignment after 6 weeks of testing (14 hour per day, 7 days per week) was to do some precise calculations and plot the results on a log/log graph paper in a straight line . The exercise was to determine if the generator met the contract specifications related to heat response under a wide range of operating conditions. There was no computer, no calculator. My calculation algorithm involved LOG and ANTI-LOG TABLES. I worked like a soldier for many weeks and then, OH bought a table-top programmable calculator that looked like a teletype machine. The demand was so high at the research division of OH that each engineer was granted 15 minutes access per day. I could accomplish 2-3 days work in 15 minutes. The assignment was completed. The generator met the specs. That teletype desk-top calculator eliminated many jobs at OH. It was my first step towards the singularity. There have been many, many more since then.

I want to say this, though, because it sounds like we can't escape any of this, or it sounds ominous, overall. We humans have a living world here we live on, everything you described exists only on the internet, I get that things done there can affect the real world, but we areyet FAR from enslaved to AI. I do agree with everything you said, and the exponential increase in AI capability is astonishing, albeit it mainly happens because the amount of
money funding it also seems to grow nearly exponentially annually. Everyone's invested in it or most that invest are, so humanity had better be and remain the master of all AI, nightmarish to think that one day humanity might have to resort to destroying the electrical grid itself to kill it off before it kills us, but I don't lose sleep over colossal things that are utterly beyond my basic purview to affect. WWIII seems more of a threat today, imo.
